I vi IV V7 I’m a Geezer. I admit it. My first exposure to this chord progression came from the 50s Doo Wop sounds. Millions of pop songs in the fifties had this progression. Here’s a great example of one (“Earth Angel” – 520KB) I have also included a Flash 6 version of "Earth Angel". Right-Click (PC) or Control Click (Mac) on the image when it comes up, and select "play" to start the sound. Select "Rewind" then "Play" to hear the song again. Select "Loop" to play the song repeatedly. I vi IV V7 Repeated. Notice the vi is lower case, not capitalized, indicating it is a minor chord. Later we will see how the vi could be a major chord, and will then be capitalized. To help clear up confusion, I will add an “m” after the vi chord’s name to indicate minor tonality: I vim IV V7 “The Way You Look Tonight” (708KB) has the same progression. I have also included a Flash 6 version of "The Way you Look tonight". Right-Click (PC) or Control Click (Mac) on the image when it comes up, and select "play" to start the sound. Select "Rewind" then "Play" to hear the song again. Select "Loop" to play the song repeatedly. Here’s another (“Over the Mountain, Across the Sea” [516KB]) – same progression as the other two songs) to cement the sound in your mind. I have also included a Flash 6 version of "Over The mountain, Across The Sea". Right-Click (PC) or Control Click (Mac) on the image when it comes up, and select "play" to start the sound. Select "Rewind" then "Play" to hear the song again. Select "Loop" to play the song repeatedly. |
